City Palace

Soi Buakhao

The City Palace Complex was conceived and designed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, and is located deep inside the walled city. The palace is now home to the last reigning royal family, who reside in a private part of the palace. It is a majestic combination of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The majority of the buildings were built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, but it was expanded upon by later rulers as well.

The Mubarak Mahal (reception building) and the Maharani's Palace are part of the City Palace Complex (the palace of the queen). The Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum is now housed in Mubarak Mahal, and it houses a large and rare array of royal costumes, delicate Pashmina (Kashmiri) shawls, Benaras silk saris, and other dresses with Sanganeri prints and folk embroidery. On view are the garments of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. Surprisingly, the Maharani's Palace has a fascinating display of well-preserved Rajput weaponry, some of which dates back to the 15th century. Aside from the arms, the palace has well-kept ceiling paintings.
