The Gurudwara is dedicated to Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, who was imprisoned in the Gwalior Fort by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir for over two years. Guru Hargobind Sahib was eventually released from prison along with 52 other kings, who had also been imprisoned by Jahangir, in a historic event known as the Bandi Chhod. The Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod Qilla Gwalior is a popular pilgrimage site for Sikhs and is visited by thousands of devotees every year. The Gurudwara is located within the Gwalior Fort complex, and visitors have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the Gurudwara.
